Fly to Camera, PART 6: Photographic Study of Parrot Flight -- African Grey, Jenday, Nanday Conure

Fly to Camera, PART 6: Photographic Study of Parrot Flight -- African Grey, Jenday, Nanday Conure Tube. Duration : 8.15 Mins.

In Part 6, we continued to use our technique of taking still photos while simultaneously recording a video of each flight. We matched each still photo with the exact video frame that corresponded to the photo. We then inserted the still photographs within the video--next to that frame. This is the second half of the session that started in Part 5. The sun was still streaming in from the side, which gave us almost perfect lighting. In order to prevent too much light saturation, we continued to keep the blinds closed at the top of the window on the sun-side, so some of the shots still showed the 3-D effect of light and dark on the bodies and wings of the birds. That helps as you observe the similarities and differences in perspective between the video camera angle and the SLR camera angle. ----------------------------- OVERALL PHOTO TECHNIQUES USED ----------------------------- In order to get more than one shot across the range of a single flight, it was necessary to use autofocus. However, the autofocus did not always focus on the birds. Autofocus works by finding sharp edges within the frame. But, feathered birds do not typically have good sharp edges. Therefore, the autofucus would often decide to use the background instead. The windows or trees outside would be in perfect focus...but not the birds :( We did try increasing the depth of field, which helped the autofucus work better, but that required stopping down the aperature--reducing the amount of light. To counter ...
